NMCD Tables
Calculation of NMCD:
To illustrate the National Median Common Denominator (NMCD) concept using real data,
I've compiled a table of median home values for each U.S. state as of February 2024.
The NMCD is calculated by averaging these median home values, and each state's Digital
Value Unit (DVU) is determined by dividing the state's median home value by the NMCD.
Calculation of NMCD:
The NMCD is the average of all state median home values:
NMCD= ∑i= 50 MHV i 50\state{NMCD} =
\frac{\sum_{i=1}^{50} \state{MHV}_i}{50}
Using the data provided, the total sum of median home values is: $17,086,000.
Dividing this by 50 states gives:
NMCD=17,086,00050=341,720\text{NMCD} = {17,086,000} / {50} = 341,720
Therefore, the NMCD is $341,720.
State-by-State DVU Calculation:
Each state's DVU is calculated by dividing its median home value by the NMCD:
DVUi=MHV i NMCD\state {DVU}_i = \frac{\state{MHV}_i} {\state{NMCD} }
Below is a table presenting each state's median home value and its corresponding DVU:

Note: Median home values are sourced from data as of February 2024.
This table demonstrates how the NMCD provides a standardized metric, allowing for equitable digital value representation
across different states, accounting for regional variations in housing markets.
